Sudan
In Sudan, homosexuals have long been threatened with flogging or even stoning to death for alleged 'fornication'. A judicial reform in July 2021 officially abolished the death penalty, but same-sex sexual relations remain dangerous in the African country. Homosexuals are still victims of discrimination in society. This is why most members of the queer community lead a difficult double life. Some marry to meet the expectations of a very conservative society.
Since April 2023, the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have been engaged in a civil war that has plunged Sudan once again into a humanitarian crisis. The situation of homosexuals has also worsened dramatically.
Johanna-Maria Fritz went to the Sudanese capital Khartoum in 2021 to show the life of this community. Her photographs are being shown publicly for the first time.
