Keep her pure

2021-2024

The idea of the pure, sexually untouched woman has permeated religions, cultures and continents for thousands of years.

Many of the patriarchal mechanisms of oppression that shape the fate of women around the world have their origins in the concept of virginity. The demonisation of female sexuality is as widespread as a veritable market in virginity. Deep-rooted notions of purity are also pervasive in pop culture, while political decisions in many places reinforce control over female sexuality.

The ongoing series explores rituals, customs and religious practices related to virginity in contemporary contexts. The photographs, objects, videos and installations in this exhibition come from Afghanistan, Albania, Austria, Germany, Italy, Nepal and Syria.
