Nagorno-Karabakh
The Wolf loves the Fog / 2020
Since the end of the Soviet Union, armed conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh has been ongoing in the South Caucasus for decades. After unsuccessful attempts at negotiation and repeated flare-ups of fighting along the ceasefire line, the clashes escalated into an Azerbaijani offensive against Armenian-occupied Nagorno-Karabakh in September 2020. Azerbaijan captured about a third of the territory. The Azerbaijani army attacked again in September 2023. The reintegration of the conflict zone into Azerbaijani territory resulted in the displacement of almost the entire Armenian population. The future of the region and its inhabitants has been uncertain ever since, and international efforts to find a lasting solution to the conflict continue.
Johanna-Maria Fritz travelled to Nagorno-Karabakh in the late summer of 2020. She witnessed the fighting and captured a chapter of this violent conflict in photographs. Her pictures have been published in Taz, Der Spiegel and Die Welt.
